Mighty God, Strong to Save... 6 September 2026

 

Mighty God, strong to save, you have willingly accommodated yourself to us by not only speaking the Holy Scriptures, but in sending your Son to us and for us. We pray for your Church and the World. For this congregation (gathered and scattered) we pray. Set captives free, open blind eyes, release prisoners, turn sorrows to gladness, and make our homes places of light, love, harmony and health.

We ask your watchful care to be bestowed on your Church throughout the world, including Broadway UMC, Cornerstone, First UMC, Korean First UMC; and especially your people who are being hounded and harmed by predators and persecutors. Forgive us for trying to earn your unearnable love; stir up in us a greater trust and confidence in your Son Jesus Christ and help us to toss away all false doctrine and false living which tarnishes your generous kindness and your glorious majesty. Further, build up the ministry, and supply all the money needed for James Post and the RUF at OU.

For all those who are being doubled over with pain; struggling with physical and emotional disintegration; and whipped and beaten by addictions, we pray (…). Raise them up, restoring a deep and rich sense of wellbeing grounded in your mercy and in your Son. Grant them proper care and draw them to yourself.

For the nations of this earth, including Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Tuvalu, we ask you to give good and wholesome governmental administrations that will promote true peace, civility, and justice.

For our own nation we pray for safety, prosperity, and godliness from the president to the humblest citizen. May abortion, human-trafficking, pornography, bigotry and abuse be quailed and brought to an end. As we come to Labor Day, may we remember the importance of, and continue to maintain, a fair day’s wages for a fair day’s work and the value of having healthy working conditions. Please bless the industry and agriculture of this nation and its productivity.

Since your invisible attributes, namely, your eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made (Romans 1:20); therefore, we pray for the creation around us, its renewal and restoration, and its fullness and its flourishing. Remind us and keep ever before our minds that creation is our friend and not our slave; our stewardship and not our property. And please, send us rain. 

Finally Lord, we long to see you act in the lives of people who have never confessed Christ Jesus as the Lord (…). Those who have walked away from the faith (…). And those who claim to be enlightened atheists and skeptics (…). Give them new hearts to believe in Christ, new eyes to see your work in our world, and new desires serve and love you always. And now, in the power of the Spirit we pray as Jesus taught us, Our Father…

So, I was interested in reading this 110-page hardback "King of Kings: A Reformed Guide to Christian Politics" by James Baird, a pastor at Covenant Church (PCA) in Naples, Florida. Well, it was an okay read. Though I would agree with the author on many points, the history is flat and bland, as if the founders of the nation overwhelmingly all meant the same thing. Sacred Space 1

Temple or Meetinghouse? I’m thinking about space. Not really about “outer-space” with starships, x-wing fighters and all that (though sometimes my family and friends think I‘m a bit spacey), but worship space. As our congregation begins to plan and plot how to remodel and renovate our worship area (Nave and Sanctuary for you liturgy-Nazis), I am going to think out-loud here a bit. It seems to me that there are two major extremes with regard to worship space. On the one hand, there are those with a heavy sacerdotal bent who look on the worship area as something like the divinely instituted Temple. Praying the Ten Commandments - 2026

  (One Way to Pray the Ten Commandments for Our Nation) Since righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people (Proverbs 14:34), and because our nation is celebrating its 250 th Anniversary soon, we earnestly and heartily pray to you, O reigning God, for our country.  Reflecting on the Ten Commandments, your law of liberty, we pray first and foremost ( Preface ) that all in this land would come to know that you are the life-giving, liberty-giving God, and that all would be set free and made alive in your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.  We also pray ( 1 st ) that all of us who are citizens and inhabitants of this land would come to know, trust and have you as the only true and living God.  That we would ( 2 nd ) avoid all idolatry and worship you properly, from the State house to our house.  That we would ( 3 rd ) treat your name with fear and reverence and honor your Word and works.  We also implore you ( 4 th ) to work on our whole populat...
