"The Supper of the Lamb" by Robert Farrar Capon. Short Review

Image
What a fun book! It was given to me by one of my parishioners, who is a chef by vocation and love. Given to me with his imprimatur, and a twinkle in his eye. And even though I am not a cook I found it fresh and fun. For us non-specialists, "The Supper of the Lamb" is just the type of book to capture your delight of eating, while thinking about ways of thinking, and processes of perceiving. The book was originally written in 1967, but has been republished a number of times. Capon, the author, was an Episcopal priest (d. 2013), therefore the work is woven through with liturgical references, Scriptural innuendos, Latin phrases, and more, but not in an oppressive way. Even what seems dated (1960s) is a pleasure to read. It is filled with wit, but also practicalities. I highly recommend the book.

Grant us, O Lord, not to be so earthly minded that we’re no heavenly good; not to respond as the world responds, not to react as the world reacts, not to function, fume, fight or fear as the world does, but to grow in loving things heavenly. Work in us that we may be truly transformed by the renewing of our minds, no longer shackled to the world’s categories and def...
