“Bad News for Outlaws: The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves Deputy U.S. Marshal” by Vaunda M. Nelson. A Short Review.

Here’s a kids book that gives younger and older readers a good sense of the Deputy U.S. Marshal, Bass Reeves. The illustrations are clear and thoughtful, and the material is easy to read. Though the story is not exhaustive, it will bring this courageous lawman to life and will even encourage readers to dig deeper into his history. Author Vaunda Michaeux Nelson and Illustrator R. Gregory Christie have done Bass Reeves right. Perfect for kids. And just right for parents and grandparents who want to give their little ones a unique and true story of a Black lawman in Indian Territory. But also, of a Christian doing his duty. I highly recommend the book.
