"Our Refuge and Strength..." - 23 March 2025

 

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). O Lord God, who rules in heaven and on earth, who directs orbits and oceans, governs harvests and hailstorms, directs plagues and pestilence, who fashions the hearts of all people and observes all their deeds (Psalm 33:15); through your Son, Jesus Christ, you reconciled to yourself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace through the blood of his cross (Colossians 1:20). Attend to our prayers as we seek your face and intercede on behalf of your Church and world.

For your church all around this globe, and around the OKC area, such as: Greater Antioch  Full Gospel Baptist, Greater Fellowship Baptist, Greater Marshall Baptist, and Great Mt. Carmel Baptist churches, we pray. Guide her leaders, heal her divisions, reclaim her waywardness, right her wrongs, mend her brokenness, strengthen her weaknesses, and fortify her fidelity. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

For the nations of our world, including our own country, we pray. Stop evil and strengthen good. Arouse hearts, hands and wallets to step in and provide for those in need, to establish and maintain clean drinking water, to build and sustain solid infrastructures, to train and fund good teachers and safe schools, to establish and enhance medical services, and to foster an environment of humaneness. And here in Oklahoma, grant us recovery from the wildfires, and bring an end to these prairie fires. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

For the leaders of the nations, we pray. May their policies and aims enhance fitness and wellness among their citizens. May they foster greater international and indigenous agreement and assistance. May they restrain warmongering, settle unrest and benefit their populations. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

For those in mental darkness, we pray. For those in dire straits, we pray. For those nearing or in the middle of bankruptcy and financial disruptions, we pray. For those brokenhearted and despondent, we pray. For those whose homes are filled with trouble or sickness, we pray. For those who are homeless, we pray. For all in various needs, we pray (…). Please comfort and relieve them according to their specific needs, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy conclusion to all their afflictions. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

For those who have never repented and believed the Gospel, those who once made their confession of faith but have since wandered away, and those who find themselves in a crisis of faith, we pray (…). May your Spirit of truth convince them of their sin and misery, enlighten their minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renew their wills, persuading and enabling them to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to us in the gospel (WSC 31). God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

We lift up our hands, hearts and heads to you, O Mighty God. Glory to you, Mighty Lord! God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. And now we gather up our requests and pray as Jesus taught us, saying, Our Father…

  John Fea is a professor of history at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, PA. A university founded in 1909 by the Brethren in Christ Church. He originally published "Was America Founded as a Christian Nation? A Historical Introduction" in 2011, and it was revised in 2016. This 328-page paperback is packed full with Colonial and American history, drawing from original sources to answer that question. It is a book written "for the historically minded and thoughtful reader who is looking for help in sorting" out this question, avoiding polemics (xix). Since we live in a sound-bite culture, Fea recognizes that it is difficult to have a sustained dialogue on this topic, but he makes a valiant effort toward having that sustained dialogue. The book reads fairly straightforward, and doesn't seem to get bogged down in the contentious mudpuddles or bogs. In the end, Fea seems to get his point across. "Is This the End?" by David Jeremiah. A Review

  I know lots of people like this book, and like this stream of published material. I'm not a Dispensationalist (by conviction) and I am resistant to alarmism - that doom-and-gloomism that says "This is the worst time in all of world history!" or some such. And that is this book from cover-to-cover. I picked the book up to read because a family member had given it to me for a Christmas present and thought I should read it. And I was disappointed. But, in all of my disappointment, I was pleasantly surprised. I was pleasantly surprised because Dr. Jeremiah actually pushes back against a certain mindset that normally walks along with Dispensational alarmism. Jeremiah asks "Will America revive again? "Ah, Lord! We are Animated by Anger and Anxiety, Fear and Fury..."

I hesitate to put this out there because of the combative environment we are in at present. But I think some souls will take courage from this, and some will also join with me as we get to the end of this little composition. I am struck by the words of God in Zechariah 8. As he rehearses the waywardness and faithlessness of his people in the past, he clearly declares that he " set every man against his neighbor " (8:10). That got me thinking long ago. I started putting the pieces together and realized that one of God's acts of judgment is division, setting a man against his neighbor. That's what happened when he divided his people into the northern tribes and southern tribes (see 1 Kings 11:26-40). Because of Solomon's turning aside, allowing his wives to turn his heart away from the God of his father, David, the Lord brings about a rift in God's people.
