"O Lord God, We Implore You..." - 16 February 2025

 

O Lord God, we implore you to make us a holy, joy-filled people in our homes, occupations, and in our various networks of friends. May those who are married be free of strife, pettiness, and fear. May those who are single be chaste and holy, enjoying you in their God-ward singleness. May the children grow stronger in grace and wisdom, loving you all their days while obeying and honoring their parents and may the parents raise their children in faithfulness and godliness – growing believers and discipling worshipers. And may the elderly flourish in God-given strength, patience, and sound-mindedness. Further, help us to be the kind of congregation that is instrumental in drawing the straying back to Christ and his church. Hear us as we silently remember some of them before you now (…).

O Lord God, we pray for your Church in all nations, as well as Community Missionary Baptist, Crest, Cross, and Crossroads to Life Baptist Church. Grant your Church to live out the righteousness, peace and joy which are in the Holy Spirit; to pursue what makes for peace and mutual upbuilding (Romans 14:17, 19); turning neither to the right hand or the left. And where she has jumped the tracks and derailed reorient her course and send her in the right direction once more. And remember the Bangladesh Pastors Project and your church among the Bawm people. May your word speed ahead and be unhindered by evil and wicked men, for not all have the faith (2 Thessalonians 3:1-2).

O Lord God, please strengthen, support, and sustain those in need (…). Oh, Lord Jesus direct their hearts to the love of God and the steadfastness of Christ (2 Thessalonians 3:5).

O Lord God, please be with our nation’s citizenry, our national leaders and State leaders. Graciously help us to recognize when we do evil and injustice, to amend our ways and correct our directions. May neither peace nor prosperity blind our eyes or deafen our ears to you, or to the cries of those being unfairly treated. Grant us to sustain and support justice and liberty for all, for the unborn, foreign born, or home born. 

O Lord God, please be with all world leaders. We pray for an end to all wars, to all natural or man-made famines, desolations, pestilences, droughts, and plagues. We pray for an end to abortion in our land and world over, and an end to the crimes of enslaving, and of prostituting women, men and children. In this regard, we make bold to pray for MS-13, ISIS, Boko-Haram, the Lord’s Resistance Army, Lashkar-e-Tayyiba, Aryan Nations, and other destructive alliances. Bring them to repentance and faith in Christ – individually and personally, but also as a whole. And if they will not, then Lord, we pray in the words of the Psalmist and on behalf of those crushed under their thuggery, “O God, break the teeth in their mouths; tear out the fangs of the young lions, O LORD! Let them vanish like water that runs away; when he aims his arrows, let them be blunted. Let them be like the snail that dissolves into slime, like the stillborn child who never sees the sun” (Psalm 58.6-8). O Lord God, we ask all this because you are good. And now we gather up these requests and pray as Jesus taught us, saying, Our Father…

  John Fea is a professor of history at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, PA. A university founded in 1909 by the Brethren in Christ Church. He originally published "Was America Founded as a Christian Nation? A Historical Introduction" in 2011, and it was revised in 2016. This 328-page paperback is packed full with Colonial and American history, drawing from original sources to answer that question. It is a book written "for the historically minded and thoughtful reader who is looking for help in sorting" out this question, avoiding polemics (xix). Since we live in a sound-bite culture, Fea recognizes that it is difficult to have a sustained dialogue on this topic, but he makes a valiant effort toward having that sustained dialogue. The book reads fairly straightforward, and doesn't seem to get bogged down in the contentious mudpuddles or bogs. In the end, Fea seems to get his point across. "Is This the End?" by David Jeremiah. A Review

  I know lots of people like this book, and like this stream of published material. I'm not a Dispensationalist (by conviction) and I am resistant to alarmism - that doom-and-gloomism that says "This is the worst time in all of world history!" or some such. And that is this book from cover-to-cover. I picked the book up to read because a family member had given it to me for a Christmas present and thought I should read it. And I was disappointed. But, in all of my disappointment, I was pleasantly surprised. I was pleasantly surprised because Dr. Jeremiah actually pushes back against a certain mindset that normally walks along with Dispensational alarmism. Jeremiah asks "Will America revive again? "Ah, Lord! We are Animated by Anger and Anxiety, Fear and Fury..."

I hesitate to put this out there because of the combative environment we are in at present. But I think some souls will take courage from this, and some will also join with me as we get to the end of this little composition. I am struck by the words of God in Zechariah 8. As he rehearses the waywardness and faithlessness of his people in the past, he clearly declares that he " set every man against his neighbor " (8:10). That got me thinking long ago. I started putting the pieces together and realized that one of God's acts of judgment is division, setting a man against his neighbor. That's what happened when he divided his people into the northern tribes and southern tribes (see 1 Kings 11:26-40). Because of Solomon's turning aside, allowing his wives to turn his heart away from the God of his father, David, the Lord brings about a rift in God's people.
