"Great and Amazing Are Your Deeds" - 26 January 2025

 

With all of those who conquered the beast and its image, and with our brothers and sisters world over, we lift our hearts with the song of Moses and the Lamb: “Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations! Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed” (Revelation 15:3b-4).

O Lord God the Almighty, whose deeds are great and amazing: you have not only called to yourself men, women, girls and boys from every tribe, tongue, and town, but you have been faithful and called us into the fellowship of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord (1 Corinthians 1:9). We pray for all of your people on every continent, our own congregation, Antioch Baptist Church, Aydelotte Baptist, Baptized Believers in the Word of God, and Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church. Bring us all to happily submit ourselves to your Scriptures as the final rule of faith and life, not just in our public pronouncements and ways of worship, but also in our day-in-and-day-out lives and relationships.

O Lord God the Almighty, whose ways are just and true: we implore you passionately to restore those who are traipsing off into dark tangles and traps, thinking themselves wiser than you, and return them into your fold. We humbly and judiciously pray you to turn around and set right those who have succumbed to Unitarian and Progressivist heterodoxies, and to lay bare the disgrace and degradation of all who hide their immoralities and injustices behind the name of Christ to victimize the vulnerable and bilk the believers! Kindly, but strongly, bring them to confess their evils, to turn away from them, and to be saved before it’s too late.

O Lord God the Almighty, who alone is holy: we acknowledge that our days are in your hands, and our seasons and successes are under your supervision. We beg you to benevolently care for those who are sick, recovering from surgery, and more (…). 

O Lord God the Almighty, who is King of the nations, who deserves to be feared and glorified: hasten the day when All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed. We intercede for all countries, including the U.S.A., Ghana, Greece, Grenada and Guatemala. We pray for peace, but not peace with evil and not peace with wickedness! We pray for righteous, wholesome peace; peace that reflects your own Shalom. Economic peace; judicial peace; international peace; and tribal peace. We pray for prosperity, but not evil prosperity or wicked prosperity. We pray for righteous, wholesome prosperity for entire regions and people groups; prosperous education; prosperous infrastructures; prosperous medical care; and prosperous family life. Also, Lord, we pray for a fitting portion of rains and showers for this region as well as those regions with ragging wildfires. And now we join voices and hearts together to pray as Jesus taught us, saying, Our Father…

  John Fea is a professor of history at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, PA. A university founded in 1909 by the Brethren in Christ Church. He originally published "Was America Founded as a Christian Nation? A Historical Introduction" in 2011, and it was revised in 2016. This 328-page paperback is packed full with Colonial and American history, drawing from original sources to answer that question. It is a book written "for the historically minded and thoughtful reader who is looking for help in sorting" out this question, avoiding polemics (xix). Since we live in a sound-bite culture, Fea recognizes that it is difficult to have a sustained dialogue on this topic, but he makes a valiant effort toward having that sustained dialogue. The book reads fairly straightforward, and doesn't seem to get bogged down in the contentious mudpuddles or bogs. In the end, Fea seems to get his point across. Union with Christ - An Application

  (This was my weekly letter to my congregation on Wednesday, 21 February 2024) This morning in my devotional reading, I was working through 1 Corinthians 8. Though I’ve read these words a huge number of times over the years, today one verse caused me to stop and take stock.  Paul wrote, “ Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ ” (1 Corinthians 8:12). What struck me is a couple of things. First, in God’s saving work, we are – by grace alone – united (hitched, bonded, ingrafted) to Christ so much so, that what happens to us happens to him, and what is his becomes ours (think of Galatians 2:20, for example). As Sinclair Ferguson put it, “through union with Christ all that is his by incarnation becomes ours through faith” (“The Christian Life,” 110). Let that percolate in your heart for a while. "Is This the End?" by David Jeremiah. A Review

  I know lots of people like this book, and like this stream of published material. I'm not a Dispensationalist (by conviction) and I am resistant to alarmism - that doom-and-gloomism that says "This is the worst time in all of world history!" or some such. And that is this book from cover-to-cover. I picked the book up to read because a family member had given it to me for a Christmas present and thought I should read it. And I was disappointed. But, in all of my disappointment, I was pleasantly surprised. I was pleasantly surprised because Dr. Jeremiah actually pushes back against a certain mindset that normally walks along with Dispensational alarmism. Jeremiah asks "Will America revive again?
