"Make Haste, O God..." - 15 December 2024

 

You who are the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, who has said: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite” (Isaiah 57:15). We rejoice and give you our great thanks and ask you to hear our grateful prayers offered in concert with Psalm 70:

Make haste, O God, to deliver me! O LORD, make haste to help me! Hear the groans and grief of those hurting through sickness, weakening bodies, sad hearts and desperate conditions (…). Speedily deliver them and swiftly help them. Hear the cries and despair of those who are down and out, done in and destitute, whether in our congregation, in our city, under our bridges, or around our neighborhoods, and make haste to help them.

Let them be put to shame and confusion who seek my life! Let them be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt! Let them turn back because of their shame who say, “Aha, Aha!” Take compassionate notice of our brothers and sisters who are being hunted down, hounded and harassed. Fortify their faith and deliver them from harm, just as you did for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace. Take compassionate notice of those being ground under the heel of jackbooted thuggery, racist violence, or judicial immorality. Take compassionate notice of those who are vulnerable and being viciously taken advantage of. Raise them up, free them, and bring justice to bear.

May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you! May those who love your salvation say evermore, “God is great!” Hear your church all around this big globe, along with this congregation, Victory Family Church, Victory Missionary Baptist, Village Baptist, and Vision Community Church, as we declare “God is great!” Build up and fill out your church in holiness and humility. May she be a shelter for those coming in out of the storm. May she be a sanctuary for those in need of refuge. May she be a light to a dark world. May her fellowship and unity be a means of grace to a fragmented and fractured planet. 

But I am poor and needy; hasten to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay! Bring all nations and countries, including the USA, to the humble recognition that we are all poor and needy before you. Bring all peoples to recognize the significance of all of us working toward the common good. Bring all nations and countries to actually see the plight of the refugees in their precincts, and to respond with mercy and care. And finally, preserve all of our borders and boundaries from being breached by banditos, bombers, drug-runners and desperados. And now, joining our hearts and voices together we pray as Jesus taught us, saying, Our Father…

  John Fea is a professor of history at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, PA. A university founded in 1909 by the Brethren in Christ Church. He originally published "Was America Founded as a Christian Nation? A Historical Introduction" in 2011, and it was revised in 2016. This 328-page paperback is packed full with Colonial and American history, drawing from original sources to answer that question. It is a book written "for the historically minded and thoughtful reader who is looking for help in sorting" out this question, avoiding polemics (xix). Since we live in a sound-bite culture, Fea recognizes that it is difficult to have a sustained dialogue on this topic, but he makes a valiant effort toward having that sustained dialogue. The book reads fairly straightforward, and doesn't seem to get bogged down in the contentious mudpuddles or bogs. In the end, Fea seems to get his point across. Union with Christ - An Application

  (This was my weekly letter to my congregation on Wednesday, 21 February 2024) This morning in my devotional reading, I was working through 1 Corinthians 8. Though I’ve read these words a huge number of times over the years, today one verse caused me to stop and take stock.  Paul wrote, “ Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ ” (1 Corinthians 8:12). What struck me is a couple of things. First, in God’s saving work, we are – by grace alone – united (hitched, bonded, ingrafted) to Christ so much so, that what happens to us happens to him, and what is his becomes ours (think of Galatians 2:20, for example). As Sinclair Ferguson put it, “through union with Christ all that is his by incarnation becomes ours through faith” (“The Christian Life,” 110). Let that percolate in your heart for a while. "Is This the End?" by David Jeremiah. A Review

  I know lots of people like this book, and like this stream of published material. I'm not a Dispensationalist (by conviction) and I am resistant to alarmism - that doom-and-gloomism that says "This is the worst time in all of world history!" or some such. And that is this book from cover-to-cover. I picked the book up to read because a family member had given it to me for a Christmas present and thought I should read it. And I was disappointed. But, in all of my disappointment, I was pleasantly surprised. I was pleasantly surprised because Dr. Jeremiah actually pushes back against a certain mindset that normally walks along with Dispensational alarmism. Jeremiah asks "Will America revive again?
