"O God, You Made the World and Everything In It..." - 10 November 2024


O God, you made the world and everything in it, you give to all mankind life and breath and everything and made from one man every nation to live on all the face of the earth. And you determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place that they should seek you, and perhaps feel their way toward you and find you, though you are actually not far from any one of us (Acts 17:24-27). We pray for all nations. Superintend their national politics, economics, education, and security so that all may have the care they need, prosper and flourish, and come to “feel their way toward” you until the knowledge of the Lord shall cover the earth as the waters cover the sea (Isaiah 11:9).

O God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Creator, Sustainer and Sovereign over all, to whom each and every one of us must give an account of our actions in this life: please bless our nation and our State. Restore the gift and value of God-ordained marriage – one man and one woman, where for better or for worse, richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, they will love and cherish one another until death parts them. Rebuild the important, godly virtue of chastity. May our country, State and city enjoy honorable industry, sound learning, and wholesome manners. Rescue us from violence, discord, confusion, pride, arrogance and every evil way. Bestow on the President and Vice-President, the President and Vice-President elect, the Governor, the Mayor, our City Council members, and all others in authority, wisdom and strength to know and to do your will. Fill them with the love of truth, righteousness and the fear of God, and cause them to be ever mindful of their vocation, which is to serve this people in and with justice and truth, whether freeborn, foreign born or unborn.

We are grateful, O Lord of Armies, for the veterans in our midst and the many we have known. Thank you for those who spent years being a defensive and deterring presence, those who were stationed all over the U.S. and deployed to towns, cities, and deserted regions in faraway places; those who trained and toiled, and those who patrolled and fought. Please watch over and preserve those who are in the military now.

Good God, caring Father, take your church in hand – to include Heritage, St. George’s, St. John’s, St. Mark’s and St. Luke’s. Repair the fractures and fissures; restrain all idolatry and immorality; refurnish that which is now lacking or lackluster; reorient those wooed and wowed by the temptation to build crowds rather than cultivate a church. May the Good News of Jesus and the Good Doctrine of your Scriptures once more gain the upper hand for the glory of your name and the advancement of your world rescue operation.

Lord God, have compassion on the grieving and hurting; restore, refresh and reinforce those recovering; "Rescue the perishing, Care for the dying, Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave" (...). Lord God, hear our prayers. And now, joining our hearts and voices together we pray as Jesus taught us, saying, Our Father…

  John Fea is a professor of history at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, PA. A university founded in 1909 by the Brethren in Christ Church. He originally published "Was America Founded as a Christian Nation? A Historical Introduction" in 2011, and it was revised in 2016. This 328-page paperback is packed full with Colonial and American history, drawing from original sources to answer that question. It is a book written "for the historically minded and thoughtful reader who is looking for help in sorting" out this question, avoiding polemics (xix). Since we live in a sound-bite culture, Fea recognizes that it is difficult to have a sustained dialogue on this topic, but he makes a valiant effort toward having that sustained dialogue. The book reads fairly straightforward, and doesn't seem to get bogged down in the contentious mudpuddles or bogs. In the end, Fea seems to get his point across. Union with Christ - An Application

  (This was my weekly letter to my congregation on Wednesday, 21 February 2024) This morning in my devotional reading, I was working through 1 Corinthians 8. Though I’ve read these words a huge number of times over the years, today one verse caused me to stop and take stock.  Paul wrote, “ Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ ” (1 Corinthians 8:12). What struck me is a couple of things. First, in God’s saving work, we are – by grace alone – united (hitched, bonded, ingrafted) to Christ so much so, that what happens to us happens to him, and what is his becomes ours (think of Galatians 2:20, for example). As Sinclair Ferguson put it, “through union with Christ all that is his by incarnation becomes ours through faith” (“The Christian Life,” 110). Let that percolate in your heart for a while. "Ah, Lord! We are Animated by Anger and Anxiety, Fear and Fury..."

I hesitate to put this out there because of the combative environment we are in at present. But I think some souls will take courage from this, and some will also join with me as we get to the end of this little composition. I am struck by the words of God in Zechariah 8. As he rehearses the waywardness and faithlessness of his people in the past, he clearly declares that he " set every man against his neighbor " (8:10). That got me thinking long ago. I started putting the pieces together and realized that one of God's acts of judgment is division, setting a man against his neighbor. That's what happened when he divided his people into the northern tribes and southern tribes (see 1 Kings 11:26-40). Because of Solomon's turning aside, allowing his wives to turn his heart away from the God of his father, David, the Lord brings about a rift in God's people.
