"In His Temple All Cry 'Glory!'" - 13 June 2021

 

Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness. Royal and regal God, who sits above all that claims our allegiances, and who is enthroned over all who are deified and idolized; we pray that you would bring all self-made divas and divinities – like youthfulness, money, health, musicians, movie stars, politicians, or whatever we fawn over and grovel before – to see that there is no authority or acclaim outside of you and your control. Raise up the humble and cast the wicked to the ground. And may all that is in heaven, on the earth and under the earth come join with us and worship you in all of your splendor and steadfast love.  Hear our prayer, O Lord, and let our cry come to you!

 The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over many waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty. We beseech you that your voice would go far and wide; your word would run free and unshackled that all may hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ, be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth. To this end, we pray for our Mega Sports VBS this coming week, for our team as we head to Carnegie in July; for the Youngs; Iversons; Pardigons; Berrys; Shepherds; and others; may your work prosper in our hands. Hear our prayer, O Lord, and let our cry come to you!

The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. Please continue to supply us with a moderate portion of rains and showers. Watch over us during this tornado season and preserve us. Grant that our farming, cattle industry, trade and commerce would burgeon. Raise up, restored and rejoicing, all who are going through rigorous regimens of treatment and those being ruthlessly wracked by grief, guilt, and depression (…). And Lord, bless the married and the single, filling our marriages and singleness with your joy, peace, health, and most of all – with you. Hear our prayer, O Lord, and let our cry come to you!

The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in his temple all cry, “Glory!” Restrain and rule our nation so that all may continue to be able to freely enter your temple and cry out “Glory to God in the highest.” And cause all countries to be healthy, whole, safe, and successful for the sake of their citizens and inhabitants. Hear our prayer, O Lord, and let our cry come to you!

The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king forever. May the LORD give strength to his people! May the LORD bless his people with peace (Psalm 29)! And finally, Holy God our Father, we implore your continued protection, provision, and promotion of your church here, world-over, as well as Faith Baptist Church, Faith Church, Faith Crossing Baptist, and Faith Tabernacle. Give strength to your people, bless your people with peace, and show that you are enthroned as king forever. And for this upcoming General Assembly of the PCA, sit enthroned, give strength to your elders and pastors who will be meeting, guide our deliberations and decisions to be right, true, good, and God-honoring, and bless us with peace. Hear our prayer, O Lord, and let our cry come to you!

All we ask in union with Jesus Christ your Son, and our Lord and Savior, as we pray together what he taught us, saying; Our Father…

  John Fea is a professor of history at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, PA. A university founded in 1909 by the Brethren in Christ Church. He originally published "Was America Founded as a Christian Nation? A Historical Introduction" in 2011, and it was revised in 2016. This 328-page paperback is packed full with Colonial and American history, drawing from original sources to answer that question. It is a book written "for the historically minded and thoughtful reader who is looking for help in sorting" out this question, avoiding polemics (xix). Since we live in a sound-bite culture, Fea recognizes that it is difficult to have a sustained dialogue on this topic, but he makes a valiant effort toward having that sustained dialogue. The book reads fairly straightforward, and doesn't seem to get bogged down in the contentious mudpuddles or bogs. In the end, Fea seems to get his point across. Union with Christ - An Application

  (This was my weekly letter to my congregation on Wednesday, 21 February 2024) This morning in my devotional reading, I was working through 1 Corinthians 8. Though I’ve read these words a huge number of times over the years, today one verse caused me to stop and take stock.  Paul wrote, “ Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ ” (1 Corinthians 8:12). What struck me is a couple of things. First, in God’s saving work, we are – by grace alone – united (hitched, bonded, ingrafted) to Christ so much so, that what happens to us happens to him, and what is his becomes ours (think of Galatians 2:20, for example). As Sinclair Ferguson put it, “through union with Christ all that is his by incarnation becomes ours through faith” (“The Christian Life,” 110). Let that percolate in your heart for a while. "Ah, Lord! We are Animated by Anger and Anxiety, Fear and Fury..."

I hesitate to put this out there because of the combative environment we are in at present. But I think some souls will take courage from this, and some will also join with me as we get to the end of this little composition. I am struck by the words of God in Zechariah 8. As he rehearses the waywardness and faithlessness of his people in the past, he clearly declares that he " set every man against his neighbor " (8:10). That got me thinking long ago. I started putting the pieces together and realized that one of God's acts of judgment is division, setting a man against his neighbor. That's what happened when he divided his people into the northern tribes and southern tribes (see 1 Kings 11:26-40). Because of Solomon's turning aside, allowing his wives to turn his heart away from the God of his father, David, the Lord brings about a rift in God's people.
