"Your Name, O LORD, Endures Forever" - Morning Prayer (2 April 2017)


Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, throughout all ages. For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Whatever the LORD pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps. He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth, who makes lightnings for the rain and brings forth the wind from his storehouses (Psalm 135.13, 5-7). We rejoice in your might and goodness, and ask you to attend to our prayers as we seek your face and intercede on behalf of your Church and world.

We lift up our hands, hearts and heads to you, Mighty God, for hearing and answering our prayers for: rain, the controlling and ending of prairie fires, sustaining us day-in-and-day-out. And we thank you for these…Glory to you, Mighty Lord! Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, throughout all ages.

We pray for this congregation, for these churches: Oklahoma City Family Church; Oklahoma Community Church; Oklahoma Full Gospel Church; Oklahoma Korean Central Presbyterian Church; Our Lady’s Cathedral; and Our Lord’s Community Church; and for your Church all around the globe. As a Master Gardner skillfully weeds, waters and works his garden to make it healthy, lush and bountiful; do so with your Church that all may know it is “God who gives the growth” (1 Corinthians 3.6). Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, throughout all ages.

We pray for the leaders of states and nations, like: Baron Waqa; Bidhya Devi Bhandari; King Willem-Alexander; Dame Patsy Reddy; and Daniel Ortega; as well as our State Representatives such as:  Mark Lawson; Mark Lepak; Ben Loring; and Jason Lowe. Show them better ways to govern and give them hearts and minds to govern better. Safeguard them from evil and enlarge in them ways and means for safeguarding those under their care. Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, throughout all ages.

We pray for the nations of our world, and notably our own country, Mexico and Canada: may we be led rightly in the ways of justice and peace, showing respect for one another and serving the common good. Preserve all lands from ruffians, saboteurs and assassins who come under the façade of white flags or under the guise of refugees. Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, throughout all ages.

We pray for friends, family members, and foes to hear and heed Jesus “proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel”” (Mark 1.14-15) … Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, throughout all ages. 

We pray for friends, family members and foes afflicted with emotional troubles … financial predicaments … marital breakdowns … family distresses … vocational crises … physical sufferings … bodily weaknesses … and others … May they know your comfort, be restored, and rise up with a new lease on life joyfully praising you now and ever. Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, throughout all ages.

  What do you get when you cross a dark dystopian storyline with sci-fi, alternative dimensions, theological and philosophical questions, and the biblical book of Job? You get The Shift , written and directed by Brock Heasley, produced by Ken Carpenter, and distributed by Angel Studios. This roughly one hour and 45 minute tale swirls around Kevin (Kristoffer Polaha) as he moves from one realm of life, with it’s happiness and heartbreak, to another dimension that is a dismal existence clearly governed by The Benefactor (masterfully played by Neal McDonough). A viewer will be asking questions all the way through, and picking up clues and answers that pull the story together bit-by-bit. The story bumps up against an infinite set of alternative possibilities, of time, space, and versions of one’s self that will likely stoke a viewer’s imagination. But the heart of the narrative - besides love, grief, loss, trust/distrust - is around the place of evil, specifically, personal or human evil.

"On Getting Out of Bed" by Alan Noble. A Review

  When it comes to family members or friends going through a significant mental crisis, or suffering, we often can feel like we’re fumbling about to help them. Sometimes, we can become like Job’s friends, whom he had to call “miserable comforters” (Job 16:2). But very recently Alan Noble, assistant professor of English at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee Oklahoma, and cofounder and editor-in-chief of “Christ and Pop Culture” penned a deeply beautiful 120-page hardback that addresses mental affliction. “On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden and Gift of Living” is written for those who struggle with mental affliction, but also pastors, teachers, parents, and loved ones, to “help them understand their loved one’s suffering. It is for anyone who ever struggles to get out of bed” (3). I finished this book earlier this week, and kept finding myself saying, “Finally! Community?

  (This is from my letter to my congregation I sent out today, 30 August 2023) As one of my elders was leading us through Carl Trueman’s Strange New World in our adult class , I appreciated Trueman’s emphasis on community. And our discussions, especially the last two Sundays, were very fruitful as we thought out loud together about this subject. Therefore, I thought I would share something from David Brooks, an Op-ed columnist that leans into this discussion.   Brooks published a book in 2019 titled, “The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life”. In that work he was taking a gentle punch at destructive trends he has been seeing, and giving some helpful correctives. And so, he notes that “Individualism, taken too far, leads to tribalism” (34).
