Another Graduation Prayer - 2016
I was asked to give the benediction at another graduation this evening. Here's how it went:
Another Prayer and Benediction
for Graduation 2016
“Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his
understanding is beyond measure. The LORD lifts up the humble; he casts the
wicked to the ground…His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his
pleasure in the legs of a man, but the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear
him, in those who hope in his steadfast love” (Psalm 147.5-6, 10-11).
“…but God
shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we
be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were
reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are
reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in
God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received
reconciliation” (Romans 5.8-11).
Remember whose you are, who you are and why you are! Let us pray:
Almighty God, who is unimpressed by
our achievements, advancements and accolades, but takes pleasure when your
people trust you and hope in your steadfast love: May your hand be upon these
young adults for good; guiding them in their adventures, excursions, and
expeditions. Cause those good things that have been handed-off to them to
flourish in them. As they meet new situations, new conditions, new ways of
thinking, give them discerning eyes and discriminating hearts to know what is
true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent and praiseworthy;
and then to have the resilience and tenacity to hold to those things. As their
parents enter this new period of time when now their little ones are launching
out as adults, help them to see better how to be the parents of their adult
children; the new ways of relating, guiding, encouraging; and help them to find
satisfaction in it. And bring all of us to grow in the grace and knowledge of
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
Now, to all
you who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible (Ephesians 6.24), stand
and receive the LORD’s blessing: “The God of hope fill you with all joy and
peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in
hope” (Romans 15:13); in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit. Amen.
