Communion Meditation - 31 May 2015
"And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot" (1 Peter 1:17-19 ESV).
You, if you have become one of God’s people thru Christ, then you have been ransomed and redeemed. But notice from what you have been liberated: the aimless conduct, futile ways, passed on to you by your forefathers. Study that a while, and hear this. Our extended families—parents, grandparents, great-grandparents—were pretty broken, and were a mixed bag; and they ended up passing on to us thoroughly messed up ways of living. For some of you here today, you will know specifically and personally what I mean. Drugs, drunken-binges, molestation, stealing, pornography, and abuse! For others of you, it was lying, arrogance, racism and bigotry, and self-righteousness. Does God give a hoot? Does God care one bit? Yes! He even sacrificed his own Son to break us out of that damned prison and set us free to walk now as newborn children, no longer necessarily chained to those “futile ways”. In other words, none of those things define you any longer! None of those things determine your destiny as they once did! No longer is “futile ways” written over your head. Now it is: Priceless Treasure of God!
