"O God, Creator, Preserver and Governor..." - 1 March 2026

 

O God, Creator, Preserver and Governor of all humanity, we humbly pray for all sorts and conditions of men; that you would be pleased to make your ways known unto us, your salvation to all nations. More especially we pray for your one, holy universal and apostolic Church, including this congregation, Garden Oaks Church of Christ, Wilshire, and Church of the Living God on Hazel, and on Kelham Ave. May she may be so guided and governed by your good Spirit and holy Word, that all of us who profess and call ourselves Christians may be led into the way of your truth, holding on to the true faith in the unity created and produced by the Holy Spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life.

Almighty God please guide and govern the nations to throw off all unjust wars and to put a stop to all human and sex trafficking. Where there is only mob rule and bedlam, we beg you to restore sanity and sound government. May all be protected from tribal violence and harm and freed from religious persecution. We think much, right now, about the Middle East, especially the Persian region. Protect your people in the cities and countrysides. Bring forth a righteous peace to the area that will foster multinational amity and promote the wellbeing of the Iranian people. Also, set our President and all other magistrates and governmental leaders on the road of impartial justice; keep ever before their minds that you have put this authority into their hands for the purpose of being honorable, fair and equitable in the execution of their offices. And watch over and guard our military members, especially those close to conflict.

O Father, from whom all fatherhood is derived, help the parents in our congregation to lead their children in good and godly ways, with all patience and joy. Strengthen our marriages that they may be full of harmony, holiness, happiness and healthiness. Give to our single adults that holy chastity by which they may follow our Lord Jesus, who remained loyal in his singleness. Bless these children here that they would grow up loving you with all their heart, soul, mind and strength, and their neighbors as themselves.

Life-giving, liberty-giving God, we implore your saving grace for folks in our families, among our friends, co-workers, and those who visit and play at our playground, such as Jade, Bakari and his family, the Asian family that comes almost daily, and others.

Finally, Lord, we commend to your fatherly goodness all those who are in any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [especially these…]; that it may please you to deliver them from faithless fears and worldly anxieties; and to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy and speedy conclusion to all their afflictions. All we ask in union with Jesus Christ your Son, and our Lord and Savior. And now we join together in the power of the Spirit to pray as he taught us, saying, Our Father…

  Years ago, in a situation long ago, in a different space and time continuum, I wrote these prayers. They were for me, as a pastor, in the midst of disappointment and feeling of deep defeat. "Counterfeit Kingdom" by Pivec and Geivett. A Review.

  Some fifteen years ago he sat in my church study. He was the minister of a large charismatic church in town and had come to invite me to join a new reforming “movement,” the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR). I had never heard of this movement, but he claimed it had apostles and prophets whom God had raised up to reignite the church and restore America to her Christian roots. Since those days I have heard more and more about the NAR, and began to notice how some prominent church leaders, pastors, and a few politicians, who are   aligned with the NAR and are coming into influence in our civil government.   Lord God, we come to intercede for your Church and world. We ask you to strengthen this congregation that in doing all things without complaining and disputing, we may become increasingly blameless, pure in quality, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation (Philippians 2:14-15). Be pleased to make us even more harmonious and to become more clearly a sign of grace to our fractured and fragmented world. Also, add to this church such as are being saved; and add to us in such a way as will mirror the new heavens and new earth, reflecting the new Jerusalem in which will dwell people from every tribe, tongue, nationality, and economic strata, gathered around your throne exalting you and hearing you say, “ Behold, I am making all things new ” (Revelation 21:1-5)!
