"Come, Holy Spirit!" - 8 June 2025

 

Creator God who in the beginning made all things of nothing by the power of your word, and all very good; whose Spirit hovered over all that was formless and void to bring forth order and life. We pray for your Spirit to hover over us; and we pray that your Spirit would continue to cause the earth to bring forth fruit bountifully. We pray: Come, Holy Spirit!

Revealing God, who assigned prophets, judges, and Psalmists, like Moses, Deborah, David and Isaiah, to bring forth your decrees, directions and praises, and clothed them with your Spirit who guided them and testified through them of the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories; cloth us with your Spirit that we may bravely serve you and our neighbors in love and truth. We pray: Come, Holy Spirit!

Holy God who sent your Son Jesus Christ into the world that through him we might have life; and after his death, burial, resurrection and ascension, you sent forth your Holy Spirit by your Son, so that we would not be left as orphans; may we know that our Lord Jesus is with us and we are with you. And we ask this especially on behalf of those facing surgery, physical troubles, loss, and shadowy insecurities (…). We pray: Come, Holy Spirit!

God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who sent the Spirit of Truth to bear witness of Jesus, and by his indwelling presence makes us able to also bear witness of our Lord: pour down your rousing and refreshing Spirit on us and your people all over the world – including Tabernacle Baptist, Tabitha, Trinity, and 12 Corners Baptist Church. We pray: Come, Holy Spirit!

Sovereign, saving God whose Son sent the helper who comes to convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in your Son; concerning righteousness, because he has ascended to your right hand, and we presently see him no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged (John 16:8-11): may the Spirit continue to convict our world – including the USA, Israel, Gaza, North and South Korea, Ukraine and Russia – concerning sin, righteousness and judgment, that all the world may turn to you and live. We pray: Come, Holy Spirit!

Adopting God, who gave us your Spirit of adoption by whom we can cry out “Abba, Father!” May your Spirit bear witness with our spirits that we are your children, no matter what our society shouts at us; no matter what the devil whispers to us; no matter what our defeats and frustrations mutter to us; no matter what our tired and trembling hearts sigh to us! We pray: Come, Holy Spirit!

Sanctifying God, whose will for us is holiness and so you have given us the Holy Spirit; may righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit run deep in us and blossom beautifully forth from us; and so fill us with joy and peace in believing that we may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. And now we pray together in the power of the Spirit as Jesus taught, saying, “Our Father…”

  Years ago, in a situation long ago, in a different space and time continuum, I wrote these prayers. They were for me, as a pastor, in the midst of disappointment and feeling of deep defeat. "Counterfeit Kingdom" by Pivec and Geivett. A Review.

  Some fifteen years ago he sat in my church study. He was the minister of a large charismatic church in town and had come to invite me to join a new reforming “movement,” the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR). I had never heard of this movement, but he claimed it had apostles and prophets whom God had raised up to reignite the church and restore America to her Christian roots. Since those days I have heard more and more about the NAR, and began to notice how some prominent church leaders, pastors, and a few politicians, who are   aligned with the NAR and are coming into influence in our civil government. "Was America Founded as a Christian Nation?" (Rev. Ed.) by John Fea. A Review

  John Fea is a professor of history at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, PA. A university founded in 1909 by the Brethren in Christ Church. He originally published "Was America Founded as a Christian Nation? A Historical Introduction" in 2011, and it was revised in 2016. This 328-page paperback is packed full with Colonial and American history, drawing from original sources to answer that question. It is a book written "for the historically minded and thoughtful reader who is looking for help in sorting" out this question, avoiding polemics (xix). Since we live in a sound-bite culture, Fea recognizes that it is difficult to have a sustained dialogue on this topic, but he makes a valiant effort toward having that sustained dialogue. The book reads fairly straightforward, and doesn't seem to get bogged down in the contentious mudpuddles or bogs. In the end, Fea seems to get his point across.
