"Creator, Preserver, Governor, We Humbly Pray..." - 5 March 2023

 

O God, Creator, Preserver and Governor of all humanity, we humbly pray for all sorts and conditions of people that you would be pleased to make your ways known unto us, your salvation to all nations. We pray for your one, holy universal and apostolic Church, including this congregation, The Well Church, West Metro Church of Christ, East 6th Street Christian, and Edmond Trinity Christian Church; that she may be so guided and governed by your good Spirit and holy Word, that all of us who profess and call ourselves Christians may be led into the way of your truth, hold on to the true faith in the unity created and produced by the Holy Spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life.

Almighty God please guide and govern the nations, including Jamaica, Japan and Jordan, to throw off all unjust wars and to put a stop to all human and sex trafficking. Where there is only mob rule and bedlam in the nations, we beg you to restore sensible and sound government. And may all be protected from tribal violence and harm, and also freed from religious persecution.

O Lord our Governor, set our President and all other magistrates and governmental leaders on the road of impartial justice; keep ever before their minds that you have put this authority into their hands for the purpose of being honorable, fair and equitable in the execution of their offices. And for the vote this Tuesday on State Question 820, may sanity and sober-mindedness prevail.

O Father, help the parents in our congregation to lead their children in good and godly ways, with all patience and joy. Strengthen our marriages so that they may be full of harmony, holiness, happiness and healthiness. Give to our single adults that holy chastity by which they may follow our Lord Jesus, who remained loyal in his singleness. Bless these children here that they would grow up loving you with all their heart, soul, mind and strength, and their neighbors as themselves.

We recognize that mangled and mishandled sexuality is heavy in our world. Help us, Lord, to become more of what you made us to be, and more of what we will one day be when Christ returns: integrated and intact. And Lord, you know better than any of us that there are some – maybe here, maybe in our families – who have deeply suffered broken sex: being used or exploited by others or feeling an acute discordance between mind and body. We thank you that not only has our Lord come and broken sin, but that you receive and welcome and heal. May they find you loving and restoring them in fresh and cleansing ways. 

Finally, Lord, we commend to your fatherly goodness all those who are in any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate (…); that it may please you to deliver them from faithless fears and worldly anxieties; and to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy and speedy conclusion to all their afflictions. All we ask in union with Jesus Christ your Son, and our Lord and Savior. And now we pray as Jesus taught us, saying, Our Father, who art in heaven…

  What do you get when you cross a dark dystopian storyline with sci-fi, alternative dimensions, theological and philosophical questions, and the biblical book of Job? You get The Shift , written and directed by Brock Heasley, produced by Ken Carpenter, and distributed by Angel Studios. This roughly one hour and 45 minute tale swirls around Kevin (Kristoffer Polaha) as he moves from one realm of life, with it’s happiness and heartbreak, to another dimension that is a dismal existence clearly governed by The Benefactor (masterfully played by Neal McDonough). A viewer will be asking questions all the way through, and picking up clues and answers that pull the story together bit-by-bit. The story bumps up against an infinite set of alternative possibilities, of time, space, and versions of one’s self that will likely stoke a viewer’s imagination. But the heart of the narrative - besides love, grief, loss, trust/distrust - is around the place of evil, specifically, personal or human evil.

"On Getting Out of Bed" by Alan Noble. A Review

  When it comes to family members or friends going through a significant mental crisis, or suffering, we often can feel like we’re fumbling about to help them. Sometimes, we can become like Job’s friends, whom he had to call “miserable comforters” (Job 16:2). But very recently Alan Noble, assistant professor of English at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee Oklahoma, and cofounder and editor-in-chief of “Christ and Pop Culture” penned a deeply beautiful 120-page hardback that addresses mental affliction. “On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden and Gift of Living” is written for those who struggle with mental affliction, but also pastors, teachers, parents, and loved ones, to “help them understand their loved one’s suffering. It is for anyone who ever struggles to get out of bed” (3). I finished this book earlier this week, and kept finding myself saying, “Finally! Community?

  (This is from my letter to my congregation I sent out today, 30 August 2023) As one of my elders was leading us through Carl Trueman’s Strange New World in our adult class , I appreciated Trueman’s emphasis on community. And our discussions, especially the last two Sundays, were very fruitful as we thought out loud together about this subject. Therefore, I thought I would share something from David Brooks, an Op-ed columnist that leans into this discussion.   Brooks published a book in 2019 titled, “The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life”. In that work he was taking a gentle punch at destructive trends he has been seeing, and giving some helpful correctives. And so, he notes that “Individualism, taken too far, leads to tribalism” (34).
