Hoofprints of Hope - A Short Review

 


Horses, tack, dressage, and grooming. It's all here along with much, much more, and it rides around the Scripture to make this a delightful devotion for young teens, preteens, and (truth be known) older grandpa guys like me. "Hoofprints of Hope: Devotional" is part of the Tyndale Kids Faith & Science project. This is ideal for readers to take up on their own; or grandparents and parents could easily enjoy it together with them.


Authored by Kathryn O'Neill who is a writer, teacher, speaker, and clearly a horse lover. This 256-page softback is pleasant to the eyes (all on cream-colored pages that have little to no glare), loaded with pictures of horses, and full of delightful details about the equine species. It is compiled into 52 short devotional readings that begin with Scripture, then present some aspect about horses (breeds, colors, grooming, hoofs, activities, history, and more). It also allows the reader a small space to write a reflection and then circle back to applying the Scripture to a youngster's life. And for those who are unfamiliar with all things horsey, there's even a glossary in the back to help us sound like experts. Simple to read. Fun to read.


As a grandfather, I'm always on the lookout for Biblical material for grandkids and young ones that parents and Pappas (like me) could read and enjoy and talk. This one fits the criteria. I learned several things and was reminded of others. The author writes well for kids. I highly recommend this book.

"King of Kings" by James Baird. A Short Review

  As a young believer I spent years in the rise of the Moral Majority, the culture wars, and political and social conservatism. I cut my teeth on R.J. Rushdoony, Gary North, David Chilton, and others. I embraced much of Francis Schaeffer's material as I could get my mind around, and so much more. So, I was interested in reading this 110-page hardback "King of Kings: A Reformed Guide to Christian Politics" by James Baird, a pastor at Covenant Church (PCA) in Naples, Florida. Well, it was an okay read. Though I would agree with the author on many points, the history is flat and bland, as if the founders of the nation overwhelmingly all meant the same thing.
