"Most Loving Father" - 19 January 2025

 

Most loving Father, who has called us into your family by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and by the working of your Holy Spirit, give us strength and desire to walk worthy of our calling, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity produced by the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:1-3).

We ask you to aid and support our missionaries, Dan and Carol Iverson in Japan; the Pardigons; Mark and Lori Berry; Dan and Becky Young in North Mexico; and especially John Rober Biggs and the RUF at OSU. Grant to them goodwill, safety, reliable co-laborers and all the financial resources they need in their mission work; and may their labor produce more than they could humanly concoct.

Look upon your Church throughout the world, along with these congregations in the greater OKC area; New Life AOG, Rock Assembly, Spring Creek AOG, and Triumph Family Worship Center. Give your approval and aid to their endeavors at being honorable in your service, pouring out on them your unstoppable peace and provision. If they are, in any place, failing, grant them recovery and reform, and cause them to stand firm as faithful witnesses, whatever squalls and storms they may face.

O Sovereign, majestic Lord, who stands above all principalities, dominions, thrones, presidencies and powers, manifest your might and glory in our country by turning the citizens of this nation toward compassionate, fair-minded, industrious, virtuous, honorable living. Please take our governmental leaders in hand – Including our State Senators – to restrain what is vile, vicious or illegitimate, and raise up among them what is good, ethical, godly and valid. We continue to plead with you to bring these wildfires in California under control and to stop their destructiveness.

We implore your kindest care and compassion on the nations of our world, especially where there is so much carnage and chaos. We pray for your direction, tranquility, stability and harmony for all nations.  We ask you to take all the world leaders and give them wisdom and the ethical fiber to do what is morally sound, monetarily solid, and manifestly stabilizing for the good of all. 

O God Most High, giver of all good gifts, who provides our daily sustenance and wellbeing, we ask you to give supporting and satisfying health and strength to the weak and wearied (…). We also ask you to lift up those who are downhearted, depressed and disconsolate, and those troubled with dread and disquietude (…). Grant your Spirit to freshly blow into their lives filling them up with hope and love that they may smile again; laughing and rejoicing with us once more. All of these requests we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, your Son and our Saving Lord. And now we join voices and hearts together to pray as Jesus taught us, saying, Our Father…

  John Fea is a professor of history at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, PA. A university founded in 1909 by the Brethren in Christ Church. He originally published "Was America Founded as a Christian Nation? A Historical Introduction" in 2011, and it was revised in 2016. This 328-page paperback is packed full with Colonial and American history, drawing from original sources to answer that question. It is a book written "for the historically minded and thoughtful reader who is looking for help in sorting" out this question, avoiding polemics (xix). Since we live in a sound-bite culture, Fea recognizes that it is difficult to have a sustained dialogue on this topic, but he makes a valiant effort toward having that sustained dialogue. The book reads fairly straightforward, and doesn't seem to get bogged down in the contentious mudpuddles or bogs. In the end, Fea seems to get his point across. Union with Christ - An Application

  (This was my weekly letter to my congregation on Wednesday, 21 February 2024) This morning in my devotional reading, I was working through 1 Corinthians 8. Though I’ve read these words a huge number of times over the years, today one verse caused me to stop and take stock.  Paul wrote, “ Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ ” (1 Corinthians 8:12). What struck me is a couple of things. First, in God’s saving work, we are – by grace alone – united (hitched, bonded, ingrafted) to Christ so much so, that what happens to us happens to him, and what is his becomes ours (think of Galatians 2:20, for example). As Sinclair Ferguson put it, “through union with Christ all that is his by incarnation becomes ours through faith” (“The Christian Life,” 110). Let that percolate in your heart for a while. "Is This the End?" by David Jeremiah. A Review

  I know lots of people like this book, and like this stream of published material. I'm not a Dispensationalist (by conviction) and I am resistant to alarmism - that doom-and-gloomism that says "This is the worst time in all of world history!" or some such. And that is this book from cover-to-cover. I picked the book up to read because a family member had given it to me for a Christmas present and thought I should read it. And I was disappointed. But, in all of my disappointment, I was pleasantly surprised. I was pleasantly surprised because Dr. Jeremiah actually pushes back against a certain mindset that normally walks along with Dispensational alarmism. Jeremiah asks "Will America revive again? Will we reverse our descent and regain respect, strength, and stability? ... those are not the questions we should really be asking.
