"O God, Most High..." - 24 July 2022

 

O God, Most High, who made all things very good by the Word of your power, and are a God of order and not of confusion: we beseech you to shape the events, strategies, deliberations and relations in our land that we may be a nation and a people who enjoy godly order and godly living; a nation and a people who honor blameless virtue and protect the aged, the unborn, the children, and the defenseless; a nation and a people who respect and promote honest work, ingenuity, quality education, and thrift; and a nation and a people who truly are a land of the free and home of the brave. O God, we ask you to set free the many in our land who are conquered and consumed by their addictions to Meth, prescription meds, opioids, gambling, and much more. And especially in Oklahoma. O God, we implore your kindness, please bring our nation relief from heat, from wildfires, and drought. Please send us the rains and showers we need, in the ways that will be best for the ground, reservoirs, aquifers, crops, and cattle.

O God, guide the nations and leaders of this world to be judicious, equitable, and charitable so that their people may enjoy good and peaceful security, health, education, stability, and clean drinking water; so that your church may live in calm liberty while your Gospel spreads throughout all lands without harm or hindrance. O God, we cry out to you to intervene on behalf of those whose livelihoods and homes are being destroyed by artillery and armies. Rise up on behalf of the wronged, on behalf of the wounded, on behalf of the ravished. Rise up and turn evil out on its ear. Rise up and show yourself the God of justice and mercy.

O God, we pray for your Church in every realm, as well as in the greater OKC area, to include Clear Springs Free Will Baptist Church, Crosspointe, Kingsview, Minneha, and Oak Hills Free Will Baptist. Restore unity where there is fragmentation, godliness where there is immorality, sound doctrine where there is error, pure worship where there is idolatry, and may the whole counsel of God have full sway over us in all that we think, do and say. 

O God, we pour out our hearts to you on behalf of those who are still unbelieving, those who have drifted away, and those who are heedlessly plunging into self-destruction (…). Like you did with Lydia, open their hearts to pay attention to the words of life spoken by your servants and field-hands (Acts 16:14). 

O God, we pray for the sick, the recovering, those who are undergoing treatment, those who are emotionally and physically staggering along, (…). Grant them restored health, renewed strength, joy and peace; grant them to gain patience, and that patience would have its perfect work in them that they may become mature and complete, lacking nothing (James 1:2-4). And now, O God, we pray as we have been taught, saying, Our Father…

  What do you get when you cross a dark dystopian storyline with sci-fi, alternative dimensions, theological and philosophical questions, and the biblical book of Job? You get The Shift , written and directed by Brock Heasley, produced by Ken Carpenter, and distributed by Angel Studios. This roughly one hour and 45 minute tale swirls around Kevin (Kristoffer Polaha) as he moves from one realm of life, with it’s happiness and heartbreak, to another dimension that is a dismal existence clearly governed by The Benefactor (masterfully played by Neal McDonough). A viewer will be asking questions all the way through, and picking up clues and answers that pull the story together bit-by-bit. The story bumps up against an infinite set of alternative possibilities, of time, space, and versions of one’s self that will likely stoke a viewer’s imagination. But the heart of the narrative - besides love, grief, loss, trust/distrust - is around the place of evil, specifically, personal or human evil.

Community?

  (This is from my letter to my congregation I sent out today, 30 August 2023) As one of my elders was leading us through Carl Trueman’s Strange New World in our adult class , I appreciated Trueman’s emphasis on community. And our discussions, especially the last two Sundays, were very fruitful as we thought out loud together about this subject. Therefore, I thought I would share something from David Brooks, an Op-ed columnist that leans into this discussion.   Brooks published a book in 2019 titled, “The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life”. In that work he was taking a gentle punch at destructive trends he has been seeing, and giving some helpful correctives. And so, he notes that “Individualism, taken too far, leads to tribalism” (34). Union with Christ - An Application

  (This was my weekly letter to my congregation on Wednesday, 21 February 2024) This morning in my devotional reading, I was working through 1 Corinthians 8. Though I’ve read these words a huge number of times over the years, today one verse caused me to stop and take stock.  Paul wrote, “ Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ ” (1 Corinthians 8:12). What struck me is a couple of things. First, in God’s saving work, we are – by grace alone – united (hitched, bonded, ingrafted) to Christ so much so, that what happens to us happens to him, and what is his becomes ours (think of Galatians 2:20, for example). As Sinclair Ferguson put it, “through union with Christ all that is his by incarnation becomes ours through faith” (“The Christian Life,” 110). Let that percolate in your heart for a while.
