God Is Our Refuge and Strength - Prayers for 22 March 2020



God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46.1). O Lord God, who rules in heaven and on earth, who directs orbits and oceans, governs harvests and hailstorms, directs plagues and pestilence, who fashions the hearts of all people and observes all their deeds (Psalm 33.15); through your Son, Jesus Christ, you reconciled to yourself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace through the blood of his cross (Colossians 1.20). Attend to our prayers as we seek your face and intercede on behalf of your Church and world.

For your church all around this globe, and around the OKC area, such as: Crosstimber UMC, Crown Heights UMC, Douglas Blvd UMC, and Edmond Chinese International Methodist Church; we pray. Guide her leaders, heal her divisions, reclaim her waywardness, right her wrongs, mend her brokenness, strengthen her weaknesses, and fortify her fidelity. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

For the nations of our world, including our own country, we pray. Stop evil and strengthen good. Put an end to this pandemic and calm the perturbations. Arouse hearts, hands and wallets to step in and provide for those in need, establish and maintain clean drinking water, build and sustain solid infrastructures, train and fund good teachers and safe schools, establish and enhance medical services, and foster an environment of humaneness. Help us to quickly find ways to put a stop to COVID-19. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

For the leaders of nations, we pray. May their policies and aims enhance fitness and wellness among their citizens. May they foster greater international and indigenous agreement and assistance. May they restrain warmongering, settle unrest and benefit their populations. And, we pray even now, that you would be pleased to hasten recovery. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

For those in mental darkness, we pray (…). For those in dire straits, we pray (…). For those nearing or in the middle of bankruptcy and financial disruptions, we pray (…). For those brokenhearted and despondent, we pray (…). For those whose homes are filled with trouble or sickness, we pray (…). For those who are homeless, we pray (…). For all in various needs, we pray (…). Please comfort and relieve them according to their specific needs, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy conclusion to all their afflictions. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

For those who have never repented and believed the Gospel, those who once made their confession of faith but have since wandered away, and those who find themselves in a crisis of faith, we pray (…). May your Spirit of truth convince them of their sin and misery, enlighten their minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renew their wills, persuading and enabling them to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to us in the gospel (WSC 31). God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

We lift up our hands, hearts and heads to you, O Mighty God, for hearing and answering our prayers. Glory to you, Mighty Lord! God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Amen.

  John Fea is a professor of history at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, PA. A university founded in 1909 by the Brethren in Christ Church. He originally published "Was America Founded as a Christian Nation? A Historical Introduction" in 2011, and it was revised in 2016. This 328-page paperback is packed full with Colonial and American history, drawing from original sources to answer that question. It is a book written "for the historically minded and thoughtful reader who is looking for help in sorting" out this question, avoiding polemics (xix). Since we live in a sound-bite culture, Fea recognizes that it is difficult to have a sustained dialogue on this topic, but he makes a valiant effort toward having that sustained dialogue. The book reads fairly straightforward, and doesn't seem to get bogged down in the contentious mudpuddles or bogs. In the end, Fea seems to get his point across. Union with Christ - An Application

  (This was my weekly letter to my congregation on Wednesday, 21 February 2024) This morning in my devotional reading, I was working through 1 Corinthians 8. Though I’ve read these words a huge number of times over the years, today one verse caused me to stop and take stock.  Paul wrote, “ Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ ” (1 Corinthians 8:12). What struck me is a couple of things. First, in God’s saving work, we are – by grace alone – united (hitched, bonded, ingrafted) to Christ so much so, that what happens to us happens to him, and what is his becomes ours (think of Galatians 2:20, for example). As Sinclair Ferguson put it, “through union with Christ all that is his by incarnation becomes ours through faith” (“The Christian Life,” 110). Let that percolate in your heart for a while. "Long Is the Way" by Alton Hardy (and Billy Ivey). A Review

  It just showed up in our church mailbox a few weeks back. It looked interesting enough, but I put it into the stack of books I was reading, with a “I’ll get to it when I can” thought. That day came today. I picked up this 202-page softback this morning and couldn’t put it down. “Long Is the Way” is the story of Pastor Alton Hardy of Urban Hope Community Church in Birmingham Alabama. From infancy to stepping into the work of Urban Hope CC, Hardy – with the help of Bill Ivey of Small Stories Studio – draws the readers into his life, with all of the fatherlessness, darkness, racism, hope, failure, rescue and rebuilding. I just couldn’t put the book down!   Hardy’s tale begins in the heart of Jim Crow and the heat of Sardis Alabama. Dealing with life in a very large sharecropper family, the author grew up in poverty like most have never experienced, in conditions we’ve only heard about from the “Old Timers”.
