"O Lord Our God" - 29 December 2019



O our Lord and our God, who has reconciled us to yourself, and to one another, by the death of your Son, having taken away the dividing wall of hostility thru his cross (Ephesians 2.14-16), we pray for your World and your Church, and we pray in the name of Jesus who is our peace.

We pray for the wrecked and the robust nations of this world, have mercy. We pray you to safeguard your Church in every land by granting each country a wholesome tranquility, healthful affluence, and honest government.

Almighty God, hear our spoken and unspoken discomforts, worries and fears about the fiscal, political and governmental future of our country. To have a President being impeached is not a trite and trivial affair, but a weighty and worrisome situation. Have mercy on our country, our President, the House and Senate, and bestow and bring about what is best for the good of the populace of this nation and the health of your Church.

Compassionate Father, we remember these who are in need…restore them body and soul, give them peace of mind and joy in the Holy Spirit.

We pray for the people in our lives and on our hearts, who are drifting into perilous places, and those who are thoughtlessly tripping along the path of harmful ways that may well lead them astray; … please restrain them and draw them out of danger, deception and defection. Also, for those who have never repented of their sins and trusted in Christ Jesus your Son, especially any who are here now, and those in our families…grant them to call on the name of the Lord and be saved. And along these lines, may Pastor Wes Martin’s Gospel-work among the Salvation Army Rehab Center continue to make disciples of Jesus, raise the dead, and restore the defiant.

We pray for your Church throughout the world, including Downtown Pentecostal Church; Friendship Pentecostal; Pillar of Fire; and River of Life Church. Guide your people in all places, by your holy Word and Holy Spirit along the way of your truth and righteousness. For those that have stumbled off the mark, may they remember that those you love you rebuke and discipline, and may they become zealous and repent. And take care of all of your peoples’ financial, physical and fellowship needs.

For this congregation we implore you: come and strengthen the faithful, arouse any who might be careless, restore the repentant, restrain any who might be reckless, reclaim any who might be wayward, steady the tottering, protect the children, embolden the weak, heal the wounded, encourage the discouraged, calm the worried, give peace to the troubled, comfort to the afflicted, and give joy to us all. And may we be eaters and relishers of your word, for because of Jesus we are called by your name, O LORD, God of hosts (Jeremiah 15.16). Amen.

  What do you get when you cross a dark dystopian storyline with sci-fi, alternative dimensions, theological and philosophical questions, and the biblical book of Job? You get The Shift , written and directed by Brock Heasley, produced by Ken Carpenter, and distributed by Angel Studios. This roughly one hour and 45 minute tale swirls around Kevin (Kristoffer Polaha) as he moves from one realm of life, with it’s happiness and heartbreak, to another dimension that is a dismal existence clearly governed by The Benefactor (masterfully played by Neal McDonough). A viewer will be asking questions all the way through, and picking up clues and answers that pull the story together bit-by-bit. "On Getting Out of Bed" by Alan Noble. A Review

  When it comes to family members or friends going through a significant mental crisis, or suffering, we often can feel like we’re fumbling about to help them. Sometimes, we can become like Job’s friends, whom he had to call “miserable comforters” (Job 16:2). But very recently Alan Noble, assistant professor of English at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee Oklahoma, and cofounder and editor-in-chief of “Christ and Pop Culture” penned a deeply beautiful 120-page hardback that addresses mental affliction. “On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden and Gift of Living” is written for those who struggle with mental affliction, but also pastors, teachers, parents, and loved ones, to “help them understand their loved one’s suffering. It is for anyone who ever struggles to get out of bed” (3). I finished this book earlier this week, and kept finding myself saying, “Finally! Community?

  (This is from my letter to my congregation I sent out today, 30 August 2023) As one of my elders was leading us through Carl Trueman’s Strange New World in our adult class , I appreciated Trueman’s emphasis on community. And our discussions, especially the last two Sundays, were very fruitful as we thought out loud together about this subject. Therefore, I thought I would share something from David Brooks, an Op-ed columnist that leans into this discussion.   Brooks published a book in 2019 titled, “The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life”. In that work he was taking a gentle punch at destructive trends he has been seeing, and giving some helpful correctives. And so, he notes that “Individualism, taken too far, leads to tribalism” (34).
